Google said today that all Google Workspace for Education users, regardless of age, will now have access to NotebookLM, an AI-powered learning tool. With this extension, AI-assisted study tools will be available in classrooms and online learning environments worldwide.
NotebookLM enjoys enterprise-grade data security and is governed by the Google Workspace for Education Terms of Service. The tech giant claims that user data is protected for educational institutions' privacy and compliance by not being assessed by humans or used to train AI models.
Known as an "AI-powered thinking partner," NotebookLM facilitates users' comprehension and interaction with educational resources. In order to create real-time summaries, guided lesson plans, quizzes, discussion prompts, and audio overviews, educators and students can upload lesson plans, curricular standards, lecture notes, or course readings. This makes learning more dynamic and approachable.
With the Gemini API enabled, NotebookLM is accessible in more than 180 areas and supports more than 35 languages. With the ability to define granular notebook-level restrictions, users can only upload material from Google Workspace sources they are authorized to access, and sharing is limited within their organization.
This AI-powered tool's eligibility for educational usage is further supported by the fact that it was created with regulatory compliance in mind, including adherence to standards like FERPA and COPPA.
All institutions using Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals, Standard, and Plus versions have the app activated by default since it is a Core Service within Google Workspace for Education. Additionally, administrators have complete control over its availability and can use the Admin console to enable or deny access for particular users.
Within one to four days of the full rollout starting on August 4, 2025, both the Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains will be able to see it. Go to the dedicated NotebookLM webpage here for additional details, including setup and maintenance options.
