At last, Microsoft 365 Copilot is gaining memories.

Microsoft is obviously putting a lot of effort into its Copilot project. It announced Security Copilot's broad release in Entra just a few hours ago. It has now been disclosed that Microsoft 365 Copilot will eventually be able to remember personal information about you, greatly increasing customization.

Memory capabilities are already included in the Copilot program for Windows, as you may be aware, but they are now being added to the Microsoft 365 Copilot version as well. Microsoft thinks this will improve the intelligence and usefulness of its AI helper. Memories in Copilot will enable the assistant to recall crucial information about you, such as your preferences and preferred subjects of conversation, much like the feature now available in ChatGPT.

In essence, this section is enabling two new functions. As was previously said, the first one has to do with Copilot Memory. The second feature is Custom Instructions, which lets users configure a standard prompt that tells the AI how to react to you in subsequent exchanges. For instance, you could request that it be more conversational, succinct, or clever. Natural language can be used to write these instructions.

Together, these features, according to Microsoft, will decrease repetitive inputs, improve personalization, and expedite interactions. Because of Copilot Memory, you could even order Copilot to always create photos of a specific size, and it would do just that.

A couple more aspects of Copilot Memory need to be understood. To begin with, customers will always receive a discreet notification letting them know that Copilot has recalled a personal detail about them. Second, the Settings tab allows you to see, edit, and remove individual memories. Lastly, if you don't want a service to implicitly remember facts about you, you can completely disable Copilot Memory.

This month, Microsoft 365 Copilot will start to roll out Copilot Memory, which will be enabled by default. Both administrators and individual tenants can disable it for specific users as well as for the entire company. Purview eDiscovery can also be used to audit memory data.
